WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation has chosen a federal judge in New Jersey to preside over all federal lawsuits alleging kidney-related injury caused by several popular heartburn drugs known as Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI).

In an order issued Aug. 2, the JPML reversed course from a prior determination that oversight of the cases by a single federal judge was not warranted based on the relatively small number of pending cases and the complexities inherent in claims involving several different products manufactured by multiple defendants.
