Shell Oil Co. Moves for Summary Judgment in Benzene Contamination Suit, Says Claims Barred by Statute of Limitations

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. –– Shell Oil Co. has moved for summary judgment in a benzene contamination suit, saying that the underlying ordinance claims filed by an Illinois town are barred by the state’s two-year statute of limitations.

In the Nov. 20 motion for summary judgment filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, Shell argued that “there is no doubt that the Village filed its claims more than two years after Village representatives knew of the alleged environmental conditions in the Village.”
